Interior Renders

Outside in the desert, it is usually going to be bright and yellow and very hot.

So we figure, by way of comfortable contrast, the insides of our buildings should be dark and gray and very cool.

We've seen what lots of people do with their shed conversions, and much of it is awe-inspiring. But we're looking to keep things ultra-simple. No interior walls, no heavy ceilings, no tricky fixtures, no intricate carpentry — we're trying to keep everything inexpensive, functional, and easy to install and maintain, with sort of a warehousey/industrial — but finished — vibe.

For us, inside is mostly about cool darkness, computer screens and sleeping — which may help to explain our choices.

The Bedrooms…

The windows are all very small — heat loves windows, even the double-paned variety. The main lights are remote control drop-in flat panel lights, edge-lit for good diffusion. And we like LED ice blue accent lighting no matter how out of fashion it currently is.

Keeping our promise to frame no interior walls, the bathroom cubicles are made from hollow slab door panels.

And as anyone can see, we're all about the screens. (But it is really nice to have enough room to do push-ups.)

The Solar Shed…

This is where the high-voltage juice from the solar panels transforms to house power. In the last few years, the tech to convert and store sun energy has improved greatly — it's now pretty easy to put together a trim and tidy system. And if we're careful, we can even pass local inspections.

Part of the reason to keep the shed small is because in the desert, it's almost a requirement to cool the LiFePO4 batteries. They get cranky if they get too hot, and heat ages them. So, a 12x12 shed with closed-cell foam insulation is our solution.

And as a bonus, we get some work and storage space.

And That's the Inside Tour…

Our planning may seem overly-meticulous, but we had to know exactly what everything would cost, and whether we could be satisfied within a low-cost blueprint. We're happy with the results.

We're looking forward to getting started.
